Last updated: November 16th, 2019

Learning how to oil cleanse your hair is a magical process that can get rid of gunk, eliminate dandruff, and make your hair look unbelievably freakin’ good.

I’ve actually stopped shampooing and conditioning my hair for this experiment – just to see how my hair responds.

And, I’ve been using an interesting combination of oils to help my hair adapt to life without shampoos and conditioners.

To be honest, I actually love using shampoos and conditioners. But, I’ve been dealing with some harsh dandruff lately. And, I’d heard that cleaning your hair with just oil is an amazing way to:

  • Eliminate severe dandruff
  • Fight psoriasis
  • Prevent itchiness
  • Get rid of buildup
  • Make your hair look and feel amazing

So, this article is my way of providing you with a small DIY guide that shows you how to easily oil wash your hair.

Plus, in this article, I’m also going to reveal the 5 best cleansing oils that restore your hair. Let’s get started…

How to oil cleanse your hair: A small DIY guide (6 simple steps)

When it comes to oil cleansing your hair, you don’t actually need all that much to get started.

Many high-quality cleansing oils are relatively affordable. And, cleansing oil is obviously the main ingredient that you’ll need!

(Don’t worry…I list the 5 best cleansing oils for hair further down in this article.)

For now, just keep in mind that you’ll need three main items to oil cleanse your hair:

  1. High-quality cleansing oil for your hair
  2. Spray bottle
  3. Good comb or scalp brush

So, once you’ve gathered your cleansing oil, spray bottle, and comb (or scalp brush) – just follow these 6 steps to DIY oil cleanse your hair:

Step 1. Start with dry hair

I’ve found that starting with dry hair is the easiest way to prepare your hair for oil cleansing.

Making sure that your hair is super dry will make it really easy for your hair to soak up your cleansing oil.

Step 2. Load your spray bottle with cleansing oil

Simply load your spray bottle with your cleansing oil.

This will help you conserve cleansing oil, and make it easier for you to spray cleansing oil directly onto your scalp.

Step 3. Spray your scalp with cleansing oil

Now for the fun part.

Just spray your scalp with cleansing oil – and make sure to be super generous with your oil!

You can seriously soak your scalp with cleansing oil if you like. This will help you directly attack all of the buildup, flakes, and other issues that you might be having with your hair.

Step 4. Work your hair with a comb or scalp brush

Working your hair with a good comb or scalp brush will help you distribute cleansing oil from your scalp throughout the rest of your hair.

Step 5. Massage your scalp

Massaging your scalp will help the cleansing oil soak into your scalp.

Plus, this will feel really good too, and even provide you with some potentially amazing beauty benefits like hair growth.

You might also want to leave the oil in your hair for at least a few minutes, too.

I personally like to soak my hair in oil for 2 to 5 minutes before rinsing. But, you can be flexible with the amount of time that you spend letting your hair soak in cleansing oil.

Step 6. Rinse

After massaging the oil into your scalp, combing your hair, and letting it absorb for a few minutes, you’ll be ready to rinse the oil out!

Feel free to hop in the shower, or just rinse your hair on its own.

Either option will work.

And that’s it!

By this point, you should be left with super clean hair that looks and feels amazing.

The 5 best cleansing oils for your hair

If you skipped straight to this part of the article, I don’t blame you.

Finding a good cleansing oil for your hair is probably the main thing that you’re concerned about, anyway.

And, as long as you take advantage of one of the following 5 best cleansing oils, you should experience awesome results…

Cleansing oil 1. DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

Oil Cleanse Hair DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil is one of the most trusted cleansing oils from Japan that can be used for both skin and hair.

I’ve actually recommended DHC Deep Cleansing Oil in a previous article for treating sebaceous filaments – because it’s an amazing product for dissolving the sebum plugs on your face.

But, when it comes to using DHC Deep Cleansing Oil in your hair – your scalp will most likely love the olive fruit oil (main ingredient) in this product.

Yes, this is an olive oil-based formula that cleans up your scalp and hair like magic. And, it doesn’t feel too heavy for your hair like traditional olive oil, either.

This is the product that I personally use to clean up my dandruff and “fix” my scalp whenever it feels itchy. So, I’m willing to bet that DHC Deep Cleansing Oil will work extremely well for your hair, too.

Cleansing oil 2. Innisfree Olive Real Cleansing Oil

Oil Cleanse Hair Innisfree Olive Real Cleansing Oil

Innisfree Olive Real Cleansing Oil is a popular cleansing oil with a light & delicious citrus scent.

No, it’s not for eating.

But, this cleansing oil should fix your hair right up!

Innisfree is actually a South Korean company that specializes in producing clean, natural beauty and skincare products.

So, the greatest perk of this cleansing oil is that it contains high-quality ingredients.

Give this one a try, and you won’t be sorry.

Cleansing oil 3. ROHTO Hada Labo Gokujun Cleansing Oil

Oil Cleanse Hair ROHTO Hada Labo Gokujun Cleansing Oil

ROHTO Hada Labo Gokujun Cleansing Oil is an awesome, high-quality product from Japan that will serve you well.

This cleansing oil is relatively affordable, and extremely effective. It contains olive fruit oil, jojoba seed oil, and a few other non-comedogenic ingredients.

Most women experience amazing results after using this product on their skin and hair.

But, this product does ship from Japan. So, it might take a little bit longer than expected to make it to your doorstep. But, this cleansing oil is a crowd-favorite, and it will definitely be worth the wait.

Cleansing oil 4. Kerastase Elixir Ultime Sublime Cleansing Oil Shampoo

Oil Cleanse Hair Kerastase Elixir Ultime Sublime Cleansing Oil Shampoo

Kerastase Elixir Ultime Sublime Cleansing Oil Shampoo is a unique product for this article, because it’s obviously a shampoo rather than just a cleansing oil.

But, this cleansing oil shampoo works just like an ordinary cleansing oil!

In fact, this product might be even easier for you to use, since it will lather into a nice foam, and absorb in your hair more evenly than a standard cleansing oil.

So, if you want the benefits of a cleansing oil in an easy-to-use shampoo product, this is the one for you.

Cleansing oil 5. Kose Softymo Deep Cleansing Oil

Oil Cleanse Hair Kose Softymo Deep Cleansing Oil

Kose Softymo Deep Cleansing Oil is a favorite cleansing oil from Japan that comes at an extremely affordable price.

The Japanese beauty supply market has really picked up in America for a number of years now.

This is probably because more Westerners are realizing that Japanese beauty products are typically high-quality, cost-effective and fun to use (they feel ‘exotic’ to use).

So, the Kose Softymo Deep Cleansing Oil is no exception. This cleansing oil is a best-seller in Japan that works amazingly well for both skin and hair.

However, keep in mind that this product ships from Japan. With standard shipping, it will probably take a few weeks for this product to arrive at your doorstep. Even with the slight shipping delay, it will probably be worth the wait!

Overall, oil cleansing hair isn’t a difficult process for women to do.

In fact, just about anyone can get their hair squeaky clean in a matter of minutes – just by using…

  • High-quality cleansing oil
  • A spray bottle
  • Comb or brush

It really is that simple!

Just spray your hair with some good cleansing oil, work your hair with a comb, and say goodbye to buildup.

I hope that this guide helps you achieve the awesome hair that you deserve.
