The Root Causes of Dandruff – What’s actually causing your dandruff?

According to Medical News Today, the exact cause of dandruff still isn’t known.

But, experts have a pretty good idea of what may contribute to your dandruff problem.

Seborrheic dermatitis is thought to be one of the most common causes of dandruff. If you know for a fact that your hair and scalp naturally produces a lot of oil, then seborrheic dermatitis very well could be the root cause of your dandruff.

Dry skin is another common factor that contributes to dandruff. As your scalp becomes drier (often during the winter months), your skin probably starts to flake. Personally speaking, this is the root cause of my dandruff – because I experience dandruff in the winter months but not the summer.

Common skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis can also naturally contribute to your dandruff problem. If your scalp or skin feels unnaturally itchy, inflamed or flaky – then you may actually be suffering from a skin condition that activates your dandruff.

Diet can be a major contributing factor to dandruff. It’s believed that not meeting your daily vitamin and mineral requirements can influence your dandruff. Plus, eating processed foods and excess sugar may also play a large role.

Unnatural hair products like shampoos, creams, and gels often contain ingredients that don’t mesh well with your natural body chemistry. Remember that your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it absorbs whatever you put on it. So, by rubbing unnatural ingredients into your scalp (like using a cheap shampoo, for example) – you may actually be doing more harm than good.

Getting rid of dandruff – Should you talk with a dermatologist first?

Now that you have a better idea of what the cause of your dandruff most likely is, you’re in a stronger position to attack whatever is specifically causing your dandruff.

But, remember that humans can experience dandruff for a number of different reasons.

So, you might want to chat with a dermatologist, since a medical professional will be in the best position to pinpoint the exact root cause of your dandruff.

If you don’t chat with a dermatologist, you can probably still fix your dandruff. But, you’ll likely have to use more of a “spray and pray” approach to get rid of dandruff.

In other words, you might have to try multiple remedies before you find a solution that actually eliminates all of your dandruff for good.

I personally had to try a combination of the remedies listed below before I found a foolproof method that worked for my dandruff.

OK. You should now be ready to see the 7 remedies that can help you treat dandruff. Here you go…

How To Fix Dandruff Remedy #7. Ketoconazole shampoo

Nizoral A-D Anti-dandruff (Ketoconazole) shampoo is consistently rated as one of the most effective dandruff treatments available.

Random trials have even shown that ketoconazole shampoos provide significantly better results than zinc pyrithione shampoos.

I thought it was obvious by now that shampoos like Head & Shoulders and Selsun Blue don’t actually work for treating dandruff. I’ve tried so many of those “dandruff shampoos” – and have been let down so many times.

It’s for this reason that Nizoral A-D is probably the only dandruff shampoo that I’ll ever recommend.

I’m typically not a huge fan of synthetic ingredients. But, dandruff is such an annoying and destructive condition – that I’ll make a big exception this time.

I’ll make an exception because ketoconazole shanpoo works extremely well for many people – especially if your dandruff is caused by seborrheic dermatitis.

Nizoral A-D is difficult to find in drug stores, so I recommend that you pick up this product online.

How To Fix Dandruff Remedy #6. Believe in neem

Organix Theraneem Scalp Therape Shampoo is the best neem shampoo that I’ve used.

And, to complement your shampoo, Organix Theraneem Scalp Therape Conditioner is another amazing neem-based product that I highly recommend.

If you aren’t familiar with neem, keep in mind that the neem tree has been used as a source of natural medicine in South Asia for over 2,000 years.

The leaves of the neem tree are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and are used to treat over 100 different diseases.

Neem is so powerful that it’s even used to treat lice.

By now, you can probably imagine why I recommend using neem in all sorts of different ways to eliminate your itchy flakes.

You might also consider purchasing pure organic neem oil to treat your scalp (easy option), or create your own natural neem treatment at home (fun but requires more time).

To create your own scalp treatment using neem, simply purchase some pure neem powder, and place two handfuls of the neem powder in a pot of boiling water. Then, wait for your pot of water to cool off, strain the water, and toss out the powder. You now have natural “neem shampoo” that you can massage into your hair while you shower.

How To Fix Dandruff Remedy #5. Stop using synthetic haircare products

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal that I highly recommend using to moisturize your scalp, condition your hair, and treat your dandruff.

It’s so important to understand that most chemical-based products and synthetic ingredients probably aren’t going to help your dandruff situation. In fact, synthetic ingredients can further irritate your scalp, and make your dandruff even worse off.

The human body isn’t designed to mesh very well with unnatural stressors like parabens, sulfates and other artificial ingredients.

So, there’s no point in trying to fix your dandruff until you’ve eliminated most of the synthetic compounds that are likely contributing to your scalp issues.

You might want to eliminate products like:

  • Artificial shampoos that strip natural oils from your hair
  • Synthetic creams
  • Unnatural gels
  • Heavy conditioners

Try treating your hair with only raw and natural ingredients like organic coconut oil for a little while, if you haven’t done so already.

If you can commit to an all-natural hair care routine, you’re bound to get amazing results. It will be uncomfortable at first. But, just stick with it, and I promise that your hair will feel significantly better in 2-4 weeks.

Editor’s note: While I shower and rinse my hair daily, I haven’t used artificial shampoos, conditioners or gels in over three months. My hair feels luxurious (oddly enough, I also attribute my luxurious hair to eating plenty of canned sardines).

How To Fix Dandruff Remedy #4. Get your nutrition in check

Rainbow Light Just Once is a powerful food-based, once-daily multivitamin that can help you naturally restore your body’s balance of vitamins and minerals – just in case your levels are a little out of whack.

Even if you already eat a well-balanced diet, it can be difficult to tell if you have a nutritional deficiency.

And, taking a high-quality multivitamin from Rainbow Light is an excellent way to “cover your bases” – and make sure that a nutritional deficiency isn’t the root cause of your dandruff.

You never know. You could be experiencing a lack of zinc or b vitamins, which has been linked to issues with dandruff.

How To Fix Dandruff Remedy #3. Have an awesome nightly ritual

Having a good nightly ritual is a life-changing practice for people who suffer from dandruff.

You will experience immediate benefits when you regularly shower at night, change your bed sheets, use fresh & hypoallergenic pillow covers, and keep a humidifier at your bedside.

Making these small changes will allow you keep your scalp clean and moisturized all night long, which will help to significantly improve your dandruff issue.

How To Fix Dandruff Remedy #2. Filter your shower water

Did you know that your skin is your body’s largest organ? Your skin absorbs whatever you put onto it, and this is why it’s so important to filter the shower water that your body is soaking in. Unfiltered shower water can contain various chemical byproducts like chloroform, birth control medication, and many other hazardous substances. This can easily contribute to dry skin problems, allergies, eczema, disease, and of course, dandruff.

The best remedy that you have for this problem is to filter your shower water.

Using a universal multi-stage filter or a vitamin C filter is an inexpensive and effective way to reduce the chlorine and chemicals that your body takes in while showering. Your hair will almost certainly feel less dry and frizzy after filtering your shower water, and this will help to solve any dandruff concerns you’re dealing with.

How To Fix Dandruff Remedy #1. The classic apple cider vinegar cure

Raw apple cider vinegar is one of Mother Nature’s greatest gifts. People have been extracting the health benefits of apple cider vinegar since the days of Socrates, the original Father of Medicine. That was back in 400 B.C., and this natural medicine is still just as effective today.

Massaging a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into your scalp while you shower might sting a little bit, but it will be one of the best feelings of pain you’ve ever felt.

This is because apple cider vinegar will adjust the pH balance of your hair, which makes it incredibly difficult for yeast to grow.

Make sure that you massage your entire scalp with apple cider vinegar, and let it sit in your hair for 4-5 minutes before shampooing it out (use an organic neem shampoo and conditioner if possible).

You can repeat this process 2-3 times per week until you’re completely dandruff free.
